Josh Wallwork, a native of Tracy, Calif., is one of the best signal callers in a long line of great Cowboy quarterbacks. He is the only player in Wyoming history to pass for more than 4,000 yards in a single season. His senior season of 1996, he threw for 4,090 yards on 286 completions and 33 touchdowns. That season he put up the most total offense in Cowboy history with 4,209 total yards. Also in 1996 he guided the Cowboys to the No. 1 passing offense in the nation. During his two seasons starting for the Pokes he became the school's most accurate passer completing 61.6 percent of his passes. He also concluded his career in the top 20 of three NCAA passing categories. He still ranks No. 3 in NCAA history in passing efficiency with a 152.7 career passer rating. He is No. 10 in on the total offense list averaging 307.0 yards per game. He is also No. 17 in career passing yards per game with 293.3 yards per contest. He concluded his Cowboy career No. 4 on the all-time passing list with 6,453 yards and No. 2 on the career touchdown list with 54. He also holds the top two single-game performances in Cowboy history throwing for 485 yards against Idaho in 1996 and 453 yards against Air Force also in '96. His 1996 season earned him All-Western Athletic Conference honors.

Another excellent quarterback to wear the brown and gold, Gridley, Calif., product Joe Hughes ended his Cowboy career in the top 10 of every major passing category. Hughes is fifth on the Wyoming career passing yardage list with 6,078 yards. His 452 career completions is No. 4 all-time for UW and 38 passing touchdowns is also No. 4 all-time. Hughes is also No. 5 on career total offense list with 6,249 total yards. His senior season of 1993, Hughes recorded the second-best single-season passing performance in UW history throwing for 3,372 yards on 236 completions and 24 touchdowns. During that season, he put up the fourth-best single-game total offense performance in Cowboy history gaining 447 yards against UTEP. His 1993 Cowboys, were one of 32 teams in the nation to have a 3,000-yard passer (Hughes; 3,135 yards), 1,000-yard rusher (Ryan Christopherson; 1,014) and a 1,000-yard receiver (Ryan Yarborough; 1,512). That 1993 Cowboy team went 8-4 earning a bid to the Copper Bowl against Kansas State.

It can be argued that Robert Midgett was part of one of the most successful stretches of Cowboy Football ever. The linebacker from Detroit, Mich., was a letterwinner from 1987-90, and in that time, the Pokes won 35 games. Midgett's teams went to three bowl games. The 1987 Cowboys won 10 games and the 1988 team won 11, making it one of the most successful two-year spans in UW Football history. Following the 1989 season in which UW went 5-6, the 1990 team rebounded to win nine games. It was a glorious era for Wyoming, complete with three bowl appearances in four seasons, including two Holiday Bowls and one Copper Bowl.
