Winterholler

John Winterholler is regarded as one of the most outstanding all-around athletes in University of Wyoming history. Winterholler, a native of Lovell, Wyo., was an outstanding four-sport athlete, earning All-Conference in football as a tailback, basketball as a forward, and baseball as a centerfielder from 1936 through 1939. He also competed in track and field as a sprinter. Winterholler was Wyoming's 1937 leading scorer in basketball averaging 8.2 points per game. He was named to the Sports Illustrated Silver Anniversary All-America football team in 1964. He lettered four years for head football coach Willard Witte.
One of the Cowboys only consensus All-America honorees, Jack Weil of Denver, Colo., was one of the great UW punters of all-time. Weil lettered four years for the Cowboys from 1980-83. He left the Cowboys No. 4 on the career punting average list averaging 42.6 yards per punt for his career (9,840 yards on 231 punts). During his career he averaged more than 40 yards per punt. He saved his best season for his senior season of 1983 when he led the country in punting average. During that season, he put up the third-best single-season punting average in UW history punting 52 times for 2,369 yards and an average of 45.6 per punt. Also during his senior season, Weil recorded the second-best punting game in school history against Air Force punting for 336 total yards on six punts for an average of 56 yards per punt. For his efforts during his senior season he became one of Wyoming football's only consensus All-America honorees, while also earning All-Western Athletic Conference honors. Weil went on to play in the NFL for the Denver Broncos and Washington Redskins.

Mike Shaft
Offensive Guard
1976, 1978-80
Mike Shaft was an All-WAC offensive guard selection in 1979 for his outstanding offensive line play. The guard from Faribault, Minn., lettered in 1976 and from 1978-80. The best year the Cowboys had while Shaft played was 1976, in which UW won eight games, and earned a Fiesta Bowl Berth versus Oklahoma. Wyoming earned wins over BYU, Utah and Arizona State that same year. The 1980 Pokes went 6-5 under first-year head coach Pat Dye, with victories over Oregon State, Utah and San Diego State.
