Jim Crawford is one of the greatest homegrown Wyoming athletes in history. The Greybull, Wyo. native emerged as one of the nation's best running backs in his senior season. Crawford earned All-American honors in 1956 and was the NCAA rushing yardage leader with 1,104 yards and was selected the Skyline Conference Back of the Year. Crawford rushed for 103 yards on 18 carries and was voted the Most Valuable Player in the 1956 Sun Bowl, in which Wyoming beat Texas Tech, 21-14. For his career, Crawford rushed for 1,775 yards. He later spent several seasons in the National Football League with the Boston Patriots.

A native of Philadelphia, Miss., Walker "Sonny" Jones played his first two years of collegiate football at Mississippi State. Coach Bowden Wyatt accepted the head coaching job at Wyoming prior to the 1948 season, he convinced Jones to transfer to Wyoming. Jones came to play tailback in Wyatt's "Tennessee T" single-wing offense. In his first game as a Cowboy he rushed for 210 yards and scored three touchdowns. He also returned a 100-yard kick return in a 61-7 rout over Colorado College. In that 1948 season, he ran for 680 yards and scored 54 points earning all-conference honors. As a senior in 1949, he teamed with Eddie Talboom, to become Wyoming's tailback "Touchdown Twins", and again earned All-Conference honors. That year, Talboom and Jones finished one-two in the league in scoring and Jones rushed for 817 yards and scored 78 points, ranking 6th in the nation and earning AP honorable mention All-America honors. Jones was drafted by the Chicago Cardinals in 1950. Jones was selected to the Wyoming Athletics Hall of Fame in 2008.

One of the greatest defensive players in the history of the University of Wyoming, Thaxton is the Cowboys' all-time leading tackler. With the strength to play on the inside and the quickness to play outside, the Denver native was the anchor of the Cowboy defense. As a redshirt freshman in 1984, he started every game at outside linebacker and was named the WAC Rookie of the Year. In 1986, his junior year, Thaxton was the only Cowboy named to the All-WAC First Team. In 1986 and 1987, he was voted defensive captain by his teammates, making him the only Wyoming player in history to be selected as captain twice. He also was selected as an Associated Press Third-Team All-American in 1987, as he helped lead the Cowboys to a WAC title and an appearance in the Holiday Bowl. When Thaxton left the University of Wyoming he had a record 467 career tackles, giving him a first-place ranking in UW history. He was inducted into the Wyoming Athletics Hall of Fame on Oct. 1, 1999.

One of the best kickers in UW football history, Jacobs served as both the placekicker and punter for the Cowboy football team from 1968 through 1970 and led the team in scoring in both 1968 and 1969. He kicked 37 field goals in his career, the most ever at the time. During his sophomore season in 1968, Jacobs led the nation in field goals made, ranked third in the nation in scoring by a kicker with 68 points, and ranked fifth nationally in punting average. That year, he kicked a 47-yard field goal against Arizona State and had a 77-yard punt at BYU. In 1969, he was named to the Look-FWAA All-American Team as well as The Sporting News All-American Team after setting a national record with 18 field goals and leading the nation in scoring by a kicker with 76 points. A two-time All-Western Athletic Conference player, he averaged 41.8 yards per punt for the Cowboys and led the WAC in punting in both 1968 and 1969. He still holds UW records for average punts per game (career), average punts per game (season), total punts in a season, and co-holds the UW records for average field goals made per game and punts in a single game. As a senior he was chosen to play in the AFCA All-American Football game, the Blue-Gray game, and the Hula Bowl. He still holds the Hula Bowl record for most PATs with 6. For his career, Jacobs kicked 37-of-77 field goals, 57-of-64 PATs, and scored 168 points for the Cowboys. His career-long field goal was a 48-yarder against Arizona State in 1970. Hailing from Bozeman, Mont., he was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in 1971. He was inducted into the Wyoming Athletics Hall of Fame in 2010.
