The Wyoming Cowboy Golf team finished the 2011 Denver Desert Shootout in 12th-place of 15 teams, on Saturday in Goodyear, Ariz. Cowboy senior Gabe Maier shot his second round under par at 69 (-3), which finished him in a tie for fourth place with a three day score of 206 (-10). The Cowboys placed 12th with a total team score of 870 (+6).
"I am very happy for Gabe it was another great finish by him," Cowboy Golf head coach Joe Jensen said. "I saw a lot of good things and we just need to keep at it. Gabe and Zach played well today, but we just need to get everyone else going."
Finishing a wire-to-wire victory on Saturday was the University of Oklahoma Sooners who shot a total of 816 (-48) as a team. Following the Sooners was, Iowa State (838, -26), TCU (839, -25), North Texas (843, -21), Tulsa (844, -20), BYU (845, -19), St. Mary's (Calif.) (848, -16), Denver (855, -9), Houston (856, -8), VCU (862, -2), and Southern Utah (866, -2).
Taking home the individual title was Oklahoma's Abraham Ancer who shot a 63 (-9) on Saturday to end the tournament with a total of 195 (-21). Trailing Ancer was his teammate Will Kropp who shot a three day total of 201 (-15). BYU's Zachary Blair took third place with a total of 203 (-13). Tying in fourth were Cowboy Maier and OU's Eduardo Castiello who both finished the tournament with a total of 206 (-10). Five players tied for sixth place with a total of 207 (-9) including; OU's Ryan Sirman, Tulsa's Chris Worrel, TCU's Johan de Beer and Tom Hoge and Iowa State's Tom Lanthrop.
Leading the way for Wyoming was Maier who recorded his second under-par round of the weekend at 69 (-3). Zach Zaremba shot a final day 73 (+1), giving him a final total of 215 (-1) and placed him in a tie for 35th-place. Clinton Boutelle concluded the tournament shooting a four-over 76, giving him a three-day total of 228 (+12) placing him in 81st-place. Placing in a tie for 85th-place was Casey Ruff who shot a final day 80 (+8), finishing the tournament with a fourteen-over 230. Michael May rounded out the five for the Cowboys shooting a final day 78 (+6), giving him a total of 232 (+16), which placed him in a tie for 89th-place.
Cowboy senior Phil Henzlik, who played as an individual for the Cowboys, shot a final day 80 (+8) and finished with a total of 226 (+10) giving him 76th-place.
Cowboy Golf will now travel to Tucson, Ariz. on Monday, March 21 to take part in the Arizona/National Invitational Tournament.
