SEASIDE, Calif. - For the last time in her career senior Jonelle Martinez and the University of Wyoming Cowgirl golf team finished action at the 2010 Mountain West Conference Championships in Seaside, Calif.
Martinez put together her best tournament of the season and ended up finishing in a tie for fourth place while the Cowgirls finished sixth with a three day total of 952 (+88). Martinez ended the three day tournament with a total 227 (+11). Her final round as a Cowgirl was her best of the season, 73 (+1) and her 11 over par tournament was also her best of the 2009-10 year.
"Jonelle played lights out," said director of golf Joe Jensen. "She did a great job down the stretch and made some puts that were very nerve racking. She will be sorely missed in the future here at Wyoming."
Sophomore Juanita Rico finished the MWC Championships in a tie for 24th place and a total of 238 stroke which was 22 over par.
The Cowgirls were unable to catch San Diego State but they did however, stay above the BYU Cougars for the first time in MWC history. Meanwhile, the New Mexico Lobos won their third straight MWC team title with their three day total of 898 (+34).
The Cowgirls will only graduate Martinez and will have this very young but experienced team back for the 2010-11 campaign.
