University of Wyoming wide receiverRyan McGuffey has been named a Second Team Freshman All-American in the mostrecent issue of the Football News. McGuffey, who started all 11 games forthe Cowboys in his redshirt freshman season of 2000, was joined on theSecond Team by wide receiver John Standeford of Purdue. The First TeamFreshmen All-America wide receivers were Jabar Gaffney of Florida and RoyWilliams of Texas.
McGuffey led the Mountain West Conference in receptions this pastseason, averaging 5.73 receptions per game. He also ranked 26th in the NCAAin receptions. McGuffey set freshman records at Wyoming for catches andreceiving yards this past season. He ended the 2000 season with 63receptions for 696 yards. The previous UW freshman records were: 25receptions, held by Wendell Montgomery (1996) and Ryan Yarborough (1990),and 456 receiving yards, held by Montgomery.
"This is a well-deserved honor for Ryan (McGuffey)," said Universityof Wyoming head football coach Vic Koenning. "He had an outstandingfreshman season. Ryan is the latest in a great tradition of Wyomingreceivers. We know he is the kind of young man who will continue to workhard, and I'm sure this will be the first of many awards for him during histime at Wyoming."
