The University of Wyoming women'sgolf team tied for 17th place out of 20 teams Tuesday at the San Diego StateLady Aztec Invitational, being played at the Willow Glen Golf Course in ElCajon, Calif. Wyoming shot a 36-hole total of 658. UW shot a round of 328on Tuesday, improving its team score by two strokes over Monday's firstround total of 330. The team championship was won by Oregon at 595. Oregonentered the final round on Tuesday in second place, trailing California bythree strokes -- 298 to 295. Oregon began this week ranked No. 25 in thenation, while Cal was ranked No. 24.
Wyoming's top individual was senior Jordan Lintz, who shot an11-over par total of 155, tying her for 33rd place. Lintz finished 10strokes back of tournament co-champions Carrie Summerhays of Brigham Youngand Pam Sowden of Oregon, who both finished at one-over par 145. Wyomingjunior Jessi Santesson, who was coming off the first tournament win of hercollege career two weeks ago at the Boise State Invitational, shot a two-daytotal of 163 to tie for 74th.
"This was a week where we struggled with a difficult course and afirst-class field of teams," said UW women's golf coach Jill Johnson."Jordan (Lintz) had a steady tournament. It wasn't her best tournament, butit was solid enough to keep her right in contention for the NCAA WestRegional at the end of the season. Jessi (Santesson) had a better round onTuesday, and Kelly Hanson had a nice tournament for only the secondcollegiate tournament of her career.
"We played against an outstanding group of teams this week, whichhopefully will make us better in the long run. Now we need to get home andhave a good week of practice to get ready for the BYU Tournament next Mondayand Tuesday in St. George, Utah."
In addition to No. 24 ranked California and No. 25 ranked Oregon,Brigham Young began the tournament ranked No. 39 in the nation.
The tournament was played at the Willow Glen Golf Course in ElCajon, Calif. The course played to a par of 72 and measured 6,207 yards.The tournament was a 36-hole event.
The Cowgirls return to action next Monday and Tuesday, April 3-4 atthe Dixie Classic, hosted by BYU in St. George, Utah.
