Carrie Bacon, a sophomore on theUniversity of Wyoming women's basketball team, was selected on Thursday as aSecond Team GTE Academic All-District VII honoree. Bacon, who has earned a3.76 cumulative grade-point average in exercise and sport science, was oneof only 10 individuals to earn First or Second Team honors. Only FirstTeam honorees are eligible for the national ballot. The AcademicAll-America team will be announced later this spring.
The GTE Academic All-District and Academic All-America Teams aresponsored by GTE Corporation. Student-athletes are selected in voting bythe College Sports Information Directors of American (CoSIDA). CoSIDADistrict VII is made up of the states of Wyoming, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas,Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota and the Canadianprovinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan.
To qualify, a student-athlete must have achieved a minimum 3.20cumulative grade-point average, must be at least a sophomore and must haveparticipated in at least 50 percent of his team's games.
Bacon is also an Academic All-Conference and AcademicScholar-Athlete selection. A year ago, Bacon was named Second TeamAll-Conference and was also named to the All-Newcomer team for the WesternAthletic Conference as a freshman.
She currently leads the Cowgirls in scoring (17.3 points per game),rebounding (8.0 rpg) and minutes played (35.9 mpg). The Cowgirls arecurrently 8-15, 2-8 in the Mountain West Conference. Bacon ranks second inthe Mountain West Conference in scoring this season (17.3 ppg). She ranksthird in the MWC in rebounding (8.0 rpg), and ranks No. 8 in the league infree-throw percentage (.734).
