The Wyoming Cowboys shot a finalround of 294 on Sunday, and moved up one place to finish 15th out of 20teams at The Nelson hosted by Stanford University. The Cowboys enteredthefinal round in 16th place. UW junior David Hearn finished in a tie for30thin the field of 104 of the nation's top golfers.
Hearn, from Brantford, Ontario, closed out the 54-hole event with around of 74 and a total of 217, four-over par. UW sophomore MikeUrbatchka,of Sheridan, Wyo., enjoyed the best round of the day for the Cowboys onSunday. Urbatchka shot a 71.
Host Stanford won the team title, coming from three strokes backentering Sunday's final 18-hole round to pass second round leader FresnoState. Stanford finished with a three-round total of 847, one strokeaheadof Fresno State at 848. Wyoming's 54-hole total was 878. Theindividualchampion was Marin Maritz of Tulsa at 203, 10-under par.
"The guys did a nice job of rebounding from a poor first round,"said University of Wyoming men's golf coach Roger Prenzlow. "I know thekids are disappointed by starting out slowly on Friday. But with thetworounds we put together on Saturday and Sunday, we now know that we cancompete with some of the top teams in the country. We need to come backinthe spring with more consistency.
"This ends our fall season. Everyone now has time to focus on theiracademics and start preparing for a spring season that I know we're alllooking forward to."
Wyoming's second round score of 278 on Saturday tied for the secondbest round of the week. Only Fresno State's 274 on Saturday was better.
The Nelson was played at the Stanford Golf Course in Stanford,Calif. The course measured 6,756 yards and played to a par of 71.
The Cowboy golf team will next tee off on Feb. 24-25, 2000, at The49er Collegiate Classic hosted by Long Beach State University.
