Grand Junction, Colo. – After the second day of competition at
the Colorado Mesa Invite, Wyoming men's and women's swimming and diving each remain
in third place.
The Cowboys ended the
day with 456 points, behind Colorado Mesa with 706 points and Colorado School
of Mines with 467 points. The Cowgirls totaled 456 points after day two,
trailing second-place Mines with 621 points and meet-leaders Colorado Mesa with
925 points.
The men's squad got
the day started with a second-place time in the 200 medley relay of 1:31.89. Sophomore
Kyle Moore placed third in the 400 individual medley with a season-best time of
4:11.58. The Cowboys dominated the 200 freestyle event, notching the three top
times. Sophomore Jack Herron earned victory with a time of 1:38.40, followed by
freshman Jacob Harlan (1:41.26) and Sophomore Liam Metzsch (1:41.40). All three
swam season-best times. The Wyoming men repeated the sweep in the 100
backstroke with top times from three freshmen. Sean Calkins recorded the first-place
time (50.51), with Jack Scafuri (51.20) and AJ Iseman (51.59) just behind.
The Cowgirls earned
their first relay victory at the CMU invite in the day's opening race,
completing the 200 medley relay in 1:45.86. Freshman Ellie Hohensinner put
forward a season-best performance in the 1000 freestyle (10:41.32), placing
second. Sophomore Shannon Chelsvig logged the top time in the 400 individual
medley, clocking in at 4:34.97. Senior Emily Stevens raced to victory in the
100 backstroke, beating out the competition by less than half a second with a
time of 55.29. Sophomore diver Peyton GrandPre scored a 441.20 on the three-meter
board while senior Lauren Puglisi tallied a 430.15. The pair placed second and fourth,
respectively.
The final day of
action kicks off tomorrow morning with preliminary heats. The UW men will also
compete against Utah in Green River, Wyo., tomorrow beginning at 1 p.m. MT.
