Grand Junction, Colo. – After the first day of competition at the Colorado
Mesa Invite, Wyoming men's and women's swimming and diving each sit in third
place.
The Cowboys ended the
day with 209.5 points, behind Colorado Mesa with 389 points and Colorado School
of Mines with 220.5 points. The Cowgirls totaled 192 points on the evening,
trailing second-place Mines by just six points with Colorado Mesa in the lead
at 316 points.
The men's squad got the
day started with a second place time in the 200 freestyle relay of 1:23.90.
Sophomore Jack Herron then earned a victory in the 500 freestyle with a time of
4:34.20, followed up with another wining time by freshman Sean Calkins in the
200 individual medley (1:52.72). Herron and Calkins also led Wyoming's 400
medley relay team to victory, clocking in at 3:22.59.
The Cowgirls book-ended
the day's races with fourth-place finishes in the 200 freestyle relay (1:37.61)
and 400 medley relay (3:55.50). Freshmen Cowgirls performed well in the 500
freestyle, with Tati Iturbe placing fourth (5:10.25) and Ellie Hohensinner
placing sixth (5:12.60). Sophomore diver Peyton GrandPre scored a 426.55 on the
one-meter board while senior Lauren Puglisi tallied a 413.55. The pair placed
third and fifth, respectively.
The second day of
action kicks off tomorrow morning with preliminary heats.
