COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Oct. 31, 2016) – Freshman defensive specialist Madi Fields has been named the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday morning. The award is the first weekly honor for Fields and the third this season for Wyoming. Additionally, she is the first Cowgirl to earn the honor during her freshman season since Lauren Scott in 2004.

The Oceanside, Calif., native averaged 3.88 digs per set over Wyoming’s two wins last week. In helping UW to its first win over Colorado State since 1997, Fields registered a team-high 13 digs against the Rams before recording a match-high 18 in the 3-1 win of Utah State. Fields was also second on the team with three service aces last week. Fields is ninth in the MW and leads the team with 2.99 digs per set for the year, including 3.62 per set in Mountain West play.

The freshman has paced UW in digs during the last six matches and 11 overall this season. For the year, she has recorded double-digit digs in ten of the 24 matches.

The Brown and Gold (15-9, 8-3 MW) return to the UniWyo Sports Complex this weekend. First serve is scheduled against New Mexico on Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. MT, and then at 1 p.m. against UNLV on Saturday.
