FRESNO, Calif. - Wyoming women's soccer earned its first
conference road win of the 2016 season on Sunday afternoon, defeating the
Fresno State Bull Dogs, 2-1.
Wyoming (8-7-1, 4-4-0
MW) struck first in the 40th minute when junior defender Alisha Bass led a
counter-attack down the field before laying a pass off for junior forward
Shaina Ashouri. The Parker, Colorado native buried the opportunity to put UW
ahead just before halftime. The Cowgirls looked to carry their lead into the
intermission, but Fresno State (7-8-1, 2-5-1 MW) equalized in the 42nd minute
on an unassisted goal from Julia Glaser.
The game remained
tied for much of the second half, until Bass created another goal-scoring
opportunity for the Cowgirls. Bass's pass found sophomore forward Jessie Gentle, who put the goal away to put Wyoming back on top. The Bulldogs
continued to pressure UW for the final 20 minutes, logging 11 second-half
shots, but Wyoming managed to keep the home from finding another equalizer.
Gentle's goal proved to be the game-winner, ending Fresno State's six-game home
unbeaten streak.
"I thought it was a
great team effort, all around," UW head coach Pete Cuadrado said. "Georgia
Rowntree played one of her best games this season and made a couple big saves
for us. I thought our forwards did a good job of holding the ball, connecting
with each other and being really dangerous. Fresno State is such a strong team
at home, and to come here and get a win is huge for us."
Junior goalkeeper Georgia Rowntree ended the day with four saves, earning her eighth win of the year. Bass
is the first UW player this season to tally multiple assists in a single game.
Ashouri now has three goals on the year after back-to-back scoring
performances. Gentle's game-winner was the first of her Cowgirl career, becoming
the fifth UW player to notch a game-winning goal this season. Freshman midfielder
Brooklynn Mooney played a complete 90 minutes for the first time in her career.
