UNM vs. UW Final Results
LARAMIE, Wyo. – Wyoming women's swimming and diving
earned victory in its first Mountain West dual of the 2016-17 season on Friday
evening, defeating the New Mexico Lobos by a score of 167-132.
The Cowgirls tabbed first-place
finishes in 10 of the dual's 16 events, including sweeps in the diving and
relay events. UW jumped out to an early, winning eight of the first nine
events. Freshman diver Karla Contreras opened the meet with a victory in the
one-meter dive, scoring a 295.80. Teammates CeeJay Harris and Lauren Puglisi rounded out the top-three. Contreras followed up her performance with a
first-place finish in the three-meter dive, scoring a 325.95. Another freshman,
Courtney Roeber, clocked a stand-out time of 54.45 in the 100 freestyle for her
first race victory of her UW career.
"We really loaded up the front
end of the meet, and once we got through the second round of diving I knew we
could do some things with some kids who haven't raced a whole lot," UW head
coach Tom Johnson said. "I was really impressed with Courtney Roeber's 100
freestyle race, for a freshman to step up like that in a conference dual meet.
The divers were unbelievable today, they were as good as I've seen in 10 years.
I was also very impressed with [Adriana] Palomino of New Mexico breaking two
pool records today. She destroyed a pool record from 1984 when a conference
championship meet was held here, and she broke it by four seconds."
Palomino broke her first pool
record in the 1000 freestyle, with a time of 10:23.34. She later repeated her
effort in the 500 freestyle, setting a new Corbett record with a time of
4:58.43.
Wyoming swimming and diving will travel
to Colorado Springs to face Air Force on Thursday, Oct. 27 for a dual beginning
at 5 p.m. MT. The UW women will then return home to compete against New Mexico
State on Friday, Oct. 28. The matchup with the Aggies is also set for 5 p.m.
