LARAMIE, Wyo. – Wyoming women’s swimming and diving
hosts its first meet of the season on Friday against the New Mexico Lobos. The
dual meet will begin at 5 p.m. MT at the Corbett Pool.
Wyoming returns to
action after a six-day break. UW opened the 2016 campaign last Saturday
competing in the Denver University Relays. The UW women finished with 268
points, behind Denver with 322 points and ahead of Northern Colorado with 158
points.
The women’s 3x500
freestyle relay team, comprised of Kelly Sheldon, Daniela Luna Rocha and Tati Iturbe, earned the victory with a time of 15:23.51. The UW women notched their
second first-place finish of the day in the 4x25 Medley Relay (Emily Stevens,
Maria Harutjunjan, Samantha Burke and Danielle Badger) with a time of 48.31.
“We’ve been trying to improve
fitness, stroke technique and turns this week,” UW head coach Tom Johnson said.
“I think we match up well in the distance events and relays, and our divers
should stack up quite well too. I always feel like if you can win the relays
and diving events, it puts you in a good position to win the dual.”
In last season’s meeting, the
Cowgirls claimed a 170-130 win over the Lobos. New Mexico opened the meet with
three-straight wins, but the Cowgirls later answered with three-consecutive
wins of their own. UW closed out the competition with a victory in the 400
freestyle relay.
