Wyoming Cowboys in Eighth Place After First 36 Holes of William H. Tucker Invitational

Freshman Kirby Coe-Kirkham the Top Cowboy in Eighth Place Individually

Albuquerque, N.M. (Sept. 28, 2018) --  In an outstanding national tournament field, the Wyoming Cowboys are in eighth place out of 17 teams after the first 36 holes of the William H. Tucker Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M.  Leading the way for the Cowboys is true freshman Kirby Coe-Kirkham from Sheridan, Wyo., who is tied for eighth individually.

Wyoming began the tournament with a five-over par round of 293 in the opening round to place them in eighth.  The  Cowboys followed that up with a two-over par round of 290 in the afternoon to maintain their eighth-place showing entering the final round on Saturday.

True freshman Coe-Kirkham fired an outstanding two-under par round of 70 in the morning round and added an even-par round of 72 in the second round to tie him for eighth place individually after 36 holes at two-under 142.

Dan Starzinsk, a junior from Phoenix, Ariz., continued his outstanding play this fall with another consistent day.  Starzinski shot rounds of 75 and 70 for a two-round total of 145 (+1), tying him for 26th place going into Saturday's final round.

Senior John Murdock from Laramie, Wyo., concluded the first day tied for 39th at 147 (+3).  Carl Underwood, a sophomore from Richland, Wash., finished two strokes back of Murdock at 149 (+5) to tie for 52nd, and true freshman Jimmy Dales from Northville, Mich., ended the day at 159 (+15), tying for 93rd.

UNLV leads the tournament, with a 14-under par score of 562 through 36 holes.  Harry Hall of UNLV leads in the individual  competition, firing a two-round total of 9-under par 135.

"I'm really proud of the way the guys competed today on what is a really good golf course against a nationally-ranked field," said UW head coach Joe Jensen.  "Dan (Starzinski) and John (Murdock) played pretty solid.  I'm obviously proud of Kirby (Coe-Kirkham) -- a young guy who was really out their fighting today.  Carl was playing well and then got into a little bogey run this afternoon, and Jimmy (Dales) isn't really playing poorly.  He's just a young guy trying to find his way against good college golfers.

"For us to be where we are in eighth place in a very good field of teams is a positive.  I know the kids played hard, and we're in position to have a good round tomorrow.  But most of the teams around us are ranked teams, so we will have to play well to make a move up the standings.  This is certainly the best group of teams we've faced this season, and this is a real quality, long, championship golf course.  One that we haven't seen yet this year and that we don't see a lot of.

"I just want the guys to come out with great attitudes tomorrow and put forth a really good effort in the final round."

The 2018 William H. Tucker Invitational is being played at the University of New Mexico Championship Course in Albuquerque, N.M.  The course measures 7,555 yards and plays to a par of 72.
