Record-Setting Day Vaults Cowboys Into Fourth Place on Final Day of Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational

Wyoming Ties Single-Round Colorado Invitational Record and John Murdock Ties UW and Colorado Invitational Single-Round Record

Erie, Colo. (Sept. 25, 2018) --  It was a record-setting day for the Wyoming Cowboy golf team on Tuesday as they tied a Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational single-round record, shooting a final round score of 13-under par 275 as a team to finish fourth in the 16-team tournament field.  Cowboy senior John Murdock fired a final round of eight-under par 64, which tied the Colorado Invitational single-round record by an individual and also tied the University of Wyoming single-round record.
The Cowboys 275 moved them up three spots in the final team standings to fourth place.  Murdock shot up 34 spots on the final day, from 40th to sixth place with a final three-round score of 214 (-2).  Two other Cowboys finished in the Top 15 individuals.  Junior Dan Starzinski tied for 10th at 216 (Even), and true freshman Kirby Coe-Kirkham tied for 14th at 217 (+1).  Sophomore Carl Underwood shot a 226 (+10) for the tournament to place 54th.  True freshman Tyler Severin finished with a 230 (+14) to tie for 75th.
Host Colorado won the team title, firing a 54-hole score of 850 (-14) to win by two strokes over Utah, 852 (-12).  The individual title was shared by CU's Trevor Olkowski and Utah's Kyler Dunkle, who both finished at 207 (-9).
All four of Wyoming's individual scores that counted toward the team score in the final round were under par rounds.  Murdock led the way with his 64 (-8), followed by Starzinski 69 (-3), Coe-Kirkham 71 (-1) and Underwood 71 (-1).
Wyoming also had two players compete in the tournament as individuals.  Jimmy Dales, another true freshman, tied for 46th at 224 (+8), and redshirt freshman Jared Edeen tied for 69th with a final score of 229 (+13).
Six of the seven Cowboys competing shot their best round of the tournament in the final round.
"John (Murdock) had a really good day out their today," said head coach Joe Jensen.  "He had three birdies on the front nine, then played several holes at even par and then really got a streak going on the back nine.
"But I'm proud of all the guys today.  All our counters played under par, and Jimmy (Dales) and Jared (Edeen) played solid rounds as individuals today.
"It was a really nice event.  I'm happy for the kids, they played hard today.  It is nice to have great contributions from top to bottom."
Murdock birdied the second, third and fourth holes and shot par on the other six holes on the front nine.  On the back nine, he birdied the 12th and 13 holes, had his only bogey of the round on the 14th, birdied the 16th, eagled the par four 17th and birdied the 18th.
It was Murdock's second Top 20 finish of the fall season.  He also placed 17th at the Air Force Falcon Invitational.  Starzinski continued his excellent play this fall with his third Top 15 finish in as many tournaments.  He won the Ram Masters Invitational and finished 12th at the Air Force event.  Coe-Kirkham's 14th-place finish was the first Top 20 finish of his career.
Murdock's 8-under par 64 in the final round ties him with three other Cowboys for the UW school single-round record.  His current teammate, Starzinski, shot an 8-under 64 at Wyoming's Desert Intercollegiate in the spring of 2018.  Two of Murdock's former teammates also shot 8-under par rounds last year.  Drew McCullough shot an 8-under par round of 63 (on a par 71 course) at the 2017 Hawai'i Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate, and Arron Lickteig fired an 8-under 64 at the 2017 Wyoming Southern Dunes Invitational.
The 2018 Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational was played at Colorado National Golf Club in Erie, Colo.  The course measured 7,676 yards and played to a par of 72.
Wyoming jumps right back into competition later this week when the Cowboys travel to Albuquerque, N.M. for the William H. Tucker Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 28-29.
