Gibson Leads Cowgirl Effort on First Day of Battle at the Rock

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (Feb. 12, 2018) – Senior Gabrielle Gibson closed the first day of the Battle at the Rock one shot off her career-best with a 69 (-3) on Monday afternoon. Her two-round total of 143 (-1) has her tied for sixth to lead the Brown and Gold at the Oak Quarry Golf Club in Riverside, Calif. Wyoming carded a 306 (+18) in the morning before posting a 297 (+9) in the afternoon portion to bring their two-round total to 603 (+27) for tenth place.

"We definitely had a few rusty moments in the first round, especially on the greens," Cowgirl head coach Josey Stender said. "I'm very pleased with their resilience and ability to adapt to the elements."

Gibson's two rounds were highlighted by an impressive 28 holes at or below par, including 10 birdies. The Temecula, Calif., native's second-round score was not only the second-best mark in the afternoon, but also tied for the third best round in Cowgirl history. Junior Megan Knadler also had a strong day for the Brown and Gold. She posted a two-round mark of 151 (+7), registering rounds of 75 (+3) and 76 (+4). Knadler made par or better on 15 holes in her first round and added two birdies in the day's second round. She is sitting tied for 32nd with one round remaining.

Playing as an individual and tied for 35th, freshman Jordan Remley fired a 152 (+8) during the first two rounds. She recorded a 77 (+5) before firing a 75 (+3) in the second round. Sitting tied for 50th is Casper native Caitlyn Skavdahl with a two-round mark of 155 (+11). The redshirt freshman opened Monday with an 81 (+9) only to storm back and move 25 spots on the leaderboard with a second-round 74 (+2), which tied her career low round.

Through the first 36 holes, sophomore Erin Sargent totaled a 158 (+14). She posted a 76 (+4) before closing the day with an 82 (+10). Both junior Sarah Hankins and redshirt sophomore Kaylee Knadler are one shot behind Sargent with Tuesday's final round remaining. Hankins recorded an 81 (+9) to go along with a 78 (+6), as Knadler opened the tournament with a 79 (+7), before an 81 (+9) on Monday afternoon.

UC Davis is leading the 14-team field with a two-round total of 579 (+6), while Hana Furuichi of UC-Riverside holds the individual top spot with a 140 (-4) heading in to the final round of play.

The Cowgirls are back on the course Tuesday morning for the final round of the Battle at the Rock. It will be a shotgun start at 8:56 a.m. MT.
