Cowgirl Tennis Has Solid Start at Wyoming Invite

UW will resume play tomorrow morning

LARAMIE, Wyo. (Sept. 29, 2017) – The Wyoming tennis team had a successful start to its fall campaign only dropping one match to begin play at the Wyoming Invite on Friday morning.
 
"I was really pleased with the team," head coach Dean Clower said. "We talked about that I wanted them to compete and playing our style. I'm not saying we were perfect, but we did what we talked about and got after it. I was proud of them, happy tonight and see if we can get it done tomorrow. It's not just what you do on the first day, but on the second and the third. We have to finish strong."
 
Four Cowgirls sported a 2-0 mark in singles while the fifth went 1-1. Junior Tessa van Der Ploeg defeated her first opponent of the day, Laura Mary of Montana State, 6-1, 6-7 (5), 6-2, followed by a straight set win against Anna Battersby of Northern Colorado, 6-2, 6-2. Sophomore Milka Genkova rallied back after dropping her first set to defeat Angelina Philippova, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2, followed by a 6-1, 6-1 win over Raffa Mora.
 
Junior Elisa Koonik won both of her matches with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Emma Podeur and a straight set win 6-4, 6-2 against Tristen Bryan-Otake, while sophomore Ana Tkachenko dropped her first match of the day 7-5, 1-6, 6-4, against Annie Walker of Montana State, but responded with a 6-0, 6-1 win against Madeline Doherty of UNC. The final Cowgirl in action was freshman Harsha Challa. She opened up with UW campaign with solid wins over Enni Zander (MSU), 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, and Carrigan Blanchard (UNC), 6-3, 6-1.
 
Only two matches for Wyoming on the doubles side. Koonik and van Der Ploeg, who are the 48th ranked team in the Oracle/ITA Division I rankings, defeated Mary and Podeur, 6-2, followed by Genkova and Tkachenko with a 6-2 victory over Philippova and Zander.  
 
Wyoming will return to action tomorrow beginning at 9 a.m. MT at the UW Indoor Tennis Courts. Senior Magdalena Stencel will begin her singles run at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships. Her first match will be against Margot Decker of Kansas State beginning at 11:30 a.m.
