Colgan Earns At-Large Bid for NCAA Tournament
INDIANAPOLIS – (March 7, 2017) – Junior Archie Colgan earned an at-large selection for the 2017 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships at the 157-pound weight class, the NCAA announced on Tuesday. It will be his first trip to the NCAA Championships.
Colgan will join teammates Drew Templeman, Bryce Meredith, Cole Mendenhall and Branson Ashworth, who automatically qualified based on their performances at the Big 12 Championship this past weekend. The national tournament is set to take place at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Mo., from March 16-18.
Colgan maintained a 34-8 overall record throughout the season, including the Big 12 tournament at the BOK Center. The Westminster, Colo., native earned a fifth-place finish at Big 12s after going 2-2 on the weekend in Tulsa, Okla. On the last NCAA coaches’ poll, Colgan was ranked 18th in the nation among 157-pound wrestlers. Colgan also placed 11th in the latest RPI poll.
The at-large selections were made by the NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee using the following selection criteria: head-to-head competition, quality wins, results against common opponents, winning percentage, rating percentage index, coaches ranking, qualifying event placement, and number of matches contested at that weight class.
