Five Pokes Earn Top-Four Seeds for Big 12 Championship
Irving, Texas (Feb. 27, 2017) – Five Cowboy wrestlers earned top-four pre-seeds for the 2017 Big 12 Championship, the conference announced Monday. The championship is set to begin this Saturday, March 4 in Tulsa, Okla.
Bryce Meredith leads the way for the Brown and Gold with the No. 2 seed at 141 pounds. The junior is 26-5 on the season and finished third at the conference tournament before a runner-up finish at the NCAA Championship a year ago.
Drew Templeman (125) and Branson Ashworth (165) each picked up the No. 3 seeds in their respective weight classes. Templeman owns a 16-6 overall mark and qualified for the NCAA Championship for the first time last season. Ashworth leads all Pokes with 33 wins on the season and has recorded four wins against ranked opponents this year.
Cole Mendenhall (149) and Archie Colgan (157) round out Cowboys pre-seeded in the top-four. Mendenhall has posted a 26-7 record with nine pins during his senior season, while Colgan holds a 31-6 mark with a 6-2 stance against Big 12 opponents.
UW also has Brandon Tribble (285) and Kyle Pope (174) each pre-seeded at No. 6 for the Big 12 Championship. Lucas Lovvorn owns a 16-10 record this season and is pre-seeded at No. 7 at 184. Junior’s Luke Paine and Ronnie Stevens are No. 9 and No. 10 in the 197 and 125-pound weight classes, respectively. Paine and Stevens along with Ashworth, Pope and Lovvorn are all making their first Big 12 Championship appearance for the Brown and Gold.
