Wyoming Swimming and Diving Impresses at Brown and Gold Meet

Brown and Gold Results
The Wyoming Swimming and diving teams hosted its annual Brown and Gold Meet on Friday evening in Corbett pool. The Gold Team edged out the Brown Team 322.5 to 263.5. The Gold Squad was led by senior captains Stephanie Young and Derek Campbell.
"The Gold Team showed a lot of heart tonight and it showed in such a fast meet for us to open the season," Wyoming head coach Tom Johnson said. "Both sides showed great enthusiasm and it showed in their efforts tonight, as we pushed some pool and school records."
Some of the highlighted times from the women's team came from sophomore Molly Coonce, as she won three events for the Gold Team. Coonce won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:05.98, the 200 breaststroke at 1:53.43 and 100 butterfly at 56.64. Senior Morgan Hartigan and junior Claudia Carlson also helped pace the Gold Team with two event wins apiece. Hartigan put up impressive times of 55.97 in the 100 backstroke and 2:06.86 in the 200 individual medley. Carlson won 200 butterfly at 2:06.37 and the 100 freestyle with a time of 53.23. The Brown Team was led by junior Jordan Denny, as she won the 200 freestyle at 1:55.52 and 200 backstroke recording a 2:04.18. Both teams split the relay events with the Gold Team taking the 200 medley relay and the Brown Team earning the 400 freestyle relay crown.
The men's team was highlighted by the Brown Team's Adam Kalms, as the All-American took home three events on the evening. Kalms recorded times of 50.45 in the 100 backstroke, 49.66 in the 100 butterfly and 1:54.48 in the 200 individual medley. Sophomore Kyle Scalise was the Gold Team's top performer on the men's side with a pair of victories. Scalise won the 100 breaststroke at 58.60 and the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:11.67. The Brown Team took both the 200 medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay.
In the diving events, newcomer Kari Campbell won the 1-meter springboard with a final score of 169.50 for the Gold Team. In the 3-meter springboard, Campbell tied for the top spot with Brown Team member Holly Heussner at 141.00. Senior Derek Campbell shined in the diving events on the men's side taking the title in both events scoring key points for the Gold Team.
"We did well today and we showed great skill, but we still have some work to do before we host our diving invite next week," said UW diving coach Yahya Radman.
The Wyoming swimming team opens the season next Saturday at the Denver University Relays. The diving team opens the season next Friday, as they host the Wyoming Diving Invite at 5 p.m. MT. The two-day event will wrap up on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. MT.
