UW-UT Game Stats
Despite a late comeback attempt, the Wyoming Cowboy football team lost a hard-fought contest to 15th-ranked Texas on Saturday, 37-17.
Wyoming (0-1 overall) held an early 9-7 lead over the Longhorns (1-0 overall), but were outscored 30-8 the rest of the way in the 2012 season opener for both teams.
UW junior wide receiver Robert Herron had a stellar season opener, as he got past the Texas defense for five catches for 173 yards and two touchdowns. Herron's yardage total was a career high for the fleet-footed receiver.
Wyoming sophomore quarterback Brett Smith had a nice outing as well, going 16-for-28 for 276 yards and two touchdowns. He also threw two interceptions.
Defensively, senior linebacker Korey Jones had a career-high 13 tackles, while sophomore cornerback Blair Burns had eight stops and two pass breakups.
The Cowboys forced a Texas three-and-out on UT's first offensive series thanks to some stout defense, and then UW's offense then put together a nice opening drive, going 56 yards on 10 plays to open the scoring. Sophomore placekicker Stuart Williams put UW on the board first as he nailed a 33-yard field goal to put the Pokes up 3-0 with 9:14 to go in the first quarter.
The Longhorns struck back with 5:05 to go in the first, as Joe Bergeron scored a 1-yard TD run on fourth down, which made it 7-3 Texas.
But the Pokes lit up the scoreboard again moments later, when junior wide receiver Robert Herron turned a routine reception into an 82-yard catch and run for a touchdown. The ensuing extra point was blocked for the 9-7 Wyoming lead.
After Wyoming's score, Texas was able to tack on two more touchdowns and a field goal in the second quarter to go into the locker room with a 24-9 lead. Texas was then able to score on a one-yard TD run by Malcolm Brown to go up 31-9 with 3:30 remaining in the third period.
Wyoming wouldn't be denied on its next drive, and on the first play of the fourth quarter, Smith hit Herron for a 22-yard TD strike to draw the score to 31-17. On Texas' next possession, quarterback David Ash fumbled the ball on the first play of the series and Wyoming senior defensive end Miraldo Michel recovered at the Texas 30-yard line. The Cowboys drove the ball down to the Texas nine-yard line with hopes of pulling to within one touchdown of the Longhorns, but on a fourth down and two from the nine UW's Smith was tackled for no gain.
Wyoming will host Toledo on Saturday in Laramie for its first home game of the season. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. at War Memorial Stadium.
