Laramie, Wyo. -

Athlete of the Week

Michael Martinez

What motivates you the most when it comes to wrestling?
Knowing that I don't do it for just me, I compete for God, my family, and some darn good friends.

What has been your favorite memory at UW?
Probably fishing with my fishing partner, Cole Dallaserra, or digging myself out of a snow drift with my getting stuck partner Alex Reider! It sure as heck wasn't going to class! Or maybe it was climbing Vedawoo with one hand and a cute girl to watch the sun set and eat jimmy johns at the top.

Has wrestling always been your best sport?
Unless you consider breaking things a sport, yes.

Are there any rules in wrestling you would like to add or remove?
I like freestyle wrestling. If it could all be like that I'd be content. You can lock hands and throw people on their heads!

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
Shooting a cruise on the old bike to a good fishing hole at Mr. McGill's ranch.

What has been your favorite class you have taken at UW?
Any classes with Mr. Waggoner or Mr. Rodgers in the Ag. Department are fun and educational. They are cowboys and I can relate to there way of thinking.

Where is your favorite place to travel and compete?
I like seeing different parts of the world. I enjoyed wrestling in Ulan Ude Russia just above Mongolia but as far as university competition, I don't really have a specific place I enjoy more than others. Right now maybe it would be St. Louis.

What have you learned throughout your wrestling career that will help you further in life?
It's a way of life that helps form who you are and how to live your life. I was taught to be ruthless on the mat and a perfect gentleman in society. Obviously, I could use some work on the perfect and gentleman part.

What are your three most visited websites?
I can hardly turn a computer on, but probably WyoWeb, Pagosa Springs Sun, and the Craigslist's motorcycle page.

What is the toughest aspect of wrestling for you?
Losing! I hate it!

What would your dream vacation be?
Just me, my horse, and a mountain lake for a couple of weeks...months...years! And maybe a fishing pole.

What has been your toughest match as a Cowboy?
2010 NCAA's round out...

Why did you choose UW?
Ms. Suder made the best home made meat balls I've ever tasted in my life on the recruiting trip! It was a smaller university town that was close to Colorado Springs for training purposes.

Is there anything you would like to say to the fans for their support?
Your support is much appreciated!
