Despite holding a leading in the final minute of the game, the Cowgirl basketball team lost by a three-point margin, 57-54, against the Loyola Marymount Lions, on Saturday afternoon. They close out the LMU-Doubletree with an 0-2 record and are now 1-4 this season.

"One of the things we talked about at halftime is we had to play with enthusiasm," said head coach Joe Legerski. "You have to help one another as a team and you have to be excited for one another. I thought we did that in the second half. We came out and made some shots and people responded. We have a six-point lead with seven minutes to go and the last seven minutes, I guess it's as we've said a young team and now all of the sudden we can't make a shot and everyone kind of tightens up. We still don't know who's going to make a play at the end. We had a number of players who had the opportunity to."

Freshman Kayla Woodward finished her day with a career high 17 points while bringing down six rebounds. She was 7-15 from the field in her 37 minutes of play. Ashley Sickles added 11 points and a team high eight rebounds, while Kaitlyn Mileto recorded eight points for the game. Wyoming shot 20-52 (.385) from the field and just 6-23 (.261) from beyond the arc.

"Hopefully we get the Kayla Woodward who played in the second half more often. She's a great offensive talent who's trying to figure out a way to step up as a freshman and that's very difficult."

LMU was led by Alex Cowling who recorded a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Hazel Ramirez finished her night with 11 points and three assists. The Lions were 21-57 (.368) from the field and 12-15 (.800) from the free throw line.Wyoming took the early 2-0 lead for the second game in a row, which was answered with seven straight points by the Lions to give them a 7-2 advantage. A basket by Kaitlyn Mileto and two free throws from Ashley Sickles brought them to within one, 7-6. Loyola Marymount responded with seven straight points to increase the lead back to eight, 14-6. Two free throws from the Chelan Landry ended the run and another basket from UW made it a four point game, 14-10. A three-point play from Alex Cowling put LMU up by seven, 17-10, with a little over ten minutes in the half. Another set of free throws from Chelan Landry started a 6-0 run to pull Wyoming to within one, 17-16. The teams traded a couple of scores as the Lions continued to lead by one, 19-18. They would extend their lead to five, 25-20, scoring six of the next eight points. The Cowgirls struggled going over three minutes until a basket by Ashley Sickles ended the drought. A three point shot followed by Kaitlyn Mileto to even it up at 25 all with under a minute to play. Unfortunately, four unanswered by Loyola Marymount gave them a 29-25 lead heading into the lockerroom.

In the second half, the Cowgirls came out fired up as a 9-4 run in the first three minutes gave them their first lead since the first half, 34-33. After a basket from the Lions, Kaitlyn Mileto hit a three-point field goal to make it 37-35 through the first media timeout. Over the next stretch of four minutes, the two teams played even as Wyoming held on to a slim 42-40 lead. With it all tied up at 46 all, the Cowgirls went on an 8-2 run to take their largest lead of the game 54-48 with seven minutes left on the clock. Loyola Marymount inched closer with two straight baskets to make the score, 54-52, with 6:06 left on the game clock. Both teams would then go cold from the field. With a minute left in the game a basket from the Lions tied up the score at 54 all. Wyoming had a couple opportunities to score but LMU would get the rebound with time winding down. With 23 seconds left in the game a basket and foul shot from Alex Cowling gave Loyola Marymount the 57-54 advantage. After a timeout from Wyoming, they had one final shot at the basket but unfortunately they fell short and suffered the three point loss, 57-54.

The Cowgirls now return home for the next three straight games. They will host the Creighton Bluejays, on Thursday, Dec. 1 and the Montana Lady Griz, on Saturday, Dec. 3. The game on Thursday is set for 7:00 p.m. while the Saturday match-up is slated for 5:00 p.m.
