Cowgirl Tennis Continues Play at UCSB Gaucho Classic

The Cowgirl tennis team continued play at the UCSB Gaucho Classic, on Saturday, in Santa Barbara.

In doubles action, all three teams continued play. In the doubles A bracket, the team of Veronica Popovici and Simona Synkova also defeated their opponents, April Scatliffe and Kiersten Meehan of UC Santa Barbara, 8-4. The Cowgirls third doubles team of Sasa Nemcova and Christa Gecheva won their match as well, 8-1, over Cheung and Simmons of Cal State Northride. In consolation doubles action, Alexandra Kovacs and Jessica Parizher defeated Colorado State's Tori Arneson and Adriana Wojakowska, 8-1.

The Cowgirls had a busy day of singles play with all seven players in action. Veronica Popovici has won all of her singles matches so far in the tournament. She defeated UC Santa Barbara's Kiersten Meehan, 6-1, 6-1, then followed that up with a three set win, 6-0, 3-6, 6-3 over Sofia Novak of UC Santa Barbara. Simona Synkova lost her first match of the day, 6-2, 7-6 against Novak of UC Santa Barbara, but rebounded in her second match of the day with a win, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 over Meehan of UC Santa Barbara. Jessica Parizher won her first match of the tournament, 7-5, 6-1 against Cal St. Northridge's Nigora Sirojddinova. She fell in her second match against Paola Cos from UC Santa Barbara, 6-4, 7-6.

Sasa Nemcova is the other Cowgirl that has won all her singles match thus far in the tournament. She defeated Lorraine Cheung from Cal St. Northridge, 6-1, 6-0, and then went on to beat Heffron from CSU, 6-1, 6-2. Alma Espinosa won both her matches today, the first against Erica Cano of UC Santa Barbara, 7-5, 6-1, and then defeated Shelby Sinoway from Cal St. Northridge, 6-0, 6-0.

Alexandra Kovacs fell to Anna Yang of Cal St. Northridge, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. Christa Gecheva also came up short today against CSU's Natalie Heffron, 6-3, 6-4.

The final round of doubles begins at 9 a.m. Pacific time followed by singles action at 10 a.m.
