The Wyoming Cowgirl soccer team (4-4 overall) scored on a penalty kick in the 66th minute of Sunday's game to down the Weber State Wildcats (1-5 overall) at the Louis S. Madrid Soccer Pitch. Senior Cowgirl Allison Masumiya scored the game-winning goal off the penalty kick for UW.
"Weber State is a good team and we knew this was going to be a game we needed to perform well in," Cowgirl head coach Danny Sanchez said. "I was really pleased with how we defended. They have some really dangerous players and we really limited their chances. I felt the longer the game went on the more confidence we gained."
In the early minutes of the first half the Cowgirls came out as the aggressors taking four shots in the first 11 minutes of the game. UW's Liz O'Reilly and Sara Paul both put shots on goal in that first 11 minutes, but Weber State keeper Ryann Waldman kept both out. The Wildcats came right back with three shots of their own in the next 20 minutes of the half, but none threatened the UW goal. Both defenses played aggressive in the final 15 minutes of the first half not allowing another shot on goal. The Cowgirls were outshot 6-5 by the Wildcats in the first half, but the UW defense did not allow a shot on goal. The teams went to the locker rooms at halftime knotted at 0-0.
Both teams came out of the locker rooms in the second half looking for the early go-ahead goal. The Wildcats' Kendra Bailey took the first shot of the second half in the 48th minute, however it did not threaten the UW goal. Cowgirls Lucie McDowell and O'Reilly also got off early shots in the second half with neither reaching the WSU net. UW's Ellen McCormick put the first shot on goal of the half for Wyoming in the 63rd minute, but WSU keeper Waldman made the save. The Cowgirls kept on the offensive attack forcing the Wildcats into a mistake. Wyoming was awarded a penalty kick following a hand ball foul in the Weber State penalty box in the 66th minute. Masumiya took the penalty kick for UW, driving the ball in the top right corner of the WSU goal, giving UW a 1-0 advantage. Following the Masumiya goal, UW picked up the defensive intensity, but Weber State had two chances to put the equalizing goal on the board in the 84th minute. The Wildcats' Jessie Baddley and Collette Simmons each put shots on goal in the 84th minute, but UW keeper Carmen McDermott kept both shots out. The Wyoming defense did not allow another shot for the next six minutes sealing the 1-0 victory.
Masumiya's penalty kick goal was the second goal of her Cowgirl career and her first of the 2011 season. UW's keeper McDermott started her first career game for UW, making two saves and recording her first career shutout. The Cowgirls outshot the Wildcats 11-10 on the day, putting five shots on goal to WSU's two.
