The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball Team (8-8 overall, 0-3 in the Mountain West Conference) closed out the weekend with a tough four set loss (15-25, 15-25, 25-20, 17-25) against the New Mexico Lobos (9-5 overall, 1-2 in the MWC), on Saturday night in Laramie.

"I'm really proud of our players," said UW head coach Carrie Yerty. "We had a few of them who were ill, not that it's an excuse, but they really battled. For them to come in and compete hard, I can only ask them to do their best. As a team, we just need to keep getting better."

Outside hitter Jodi Purdy led the way for the Cowgirls with 13 kills, while adding five digs and three blocks. She was followed by Lauren Whitney with 11 kills and Dani Bedore with eight. Jessica Kagarise finished with a team high 14 digs, while Jadranka Tramosjlanin added 12. Wyoming hit .080 (46-34-150) for the match.

New Mexico was led by Ashley Rhoades with 12 kills and seven blocks, while Lisa Meeter added 11 kills and 11 digs. The Lobos hit .312 (54-15-125) for the match and out blocked the Cowgirls 10.5-8.

After the Cowgirls scored the first point of the set, New Mexico scored the next seven points to take a 7-1 advantage. Wyoming would chip away at the lead with a 7-5 run to pull within four, 12-8. The Lobos answered by scoring six of eight to extend the lead to seven, 18-11. Unfortunately, Wyoming could not make a comeback as they fell 25-15.

The Lobos took a 5-1 lead to begin the second set. Wyoming answered with a 5-1 run to even it up at six all. New Mexico would score the next seven of eight to regain a six point lead, 13-7. They would maintain that lead the remainder of the set as they would win 25-15 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

In the third set, Wyoming fell behind 9-5 but they would answer with four points to even it up at nine. The two teams traded scores until the Cowgirls went up four, 19-15. They maintained their composure and held off any New Mexico run as they won the set 25-20.

New Mexico took a 9-5 lead in the fourth set, but the Cowgirls battled back with a 6-4 run to pull within two, 13-11. Unfortunately that would be as close as they would get as the Lobos won the set 25-17 and the match 3-1.

The Cowgirls will continue play at home next week with two matches. They will face the Adams State Grizzlies, on Tuesday, Sept. 29, and the Colorado State Rams, on Friday, Oct. 2. Both matches are set for 7 p.m.
