Wyoming Volleyball Out On the Road for First Time

The Cowgirl Volleyball Team will be on the road for the first time in 2009 as they participate in the Fiesta Bowl Classic, Friday-Saturday, Sept. 11-12, in Flagstaff. They will start things off on Friday against the host school Northern Arizona Lumberjacks. They play the following day against The Citadel Bulldogs and the Utah State Aggies to wrap up the tournament.
Wyoming enters the week with a 4-2 (.667) record overall after going 2-1 last weekend at the UniWyo Cowgirl Invite. The Cowgirls are currently led by freshman outside hitter Jodi Purdy who is averaging 3.12 kills, which is fifth in the league, and 2.58 digs per set. She is followed by Lauren Whitney who is adding 2.82 kills and Dani Bedore with 2.00 kills and 1.57 digs per set. As a team, they are averaging 11.88 kills, 13.12 digs and 11.21 assists per set.
Their first opponent of the weekend will be the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks, on Friday, Sept. 11. They are currently 2-4 coming in to the weekend, and are led by Lexi Sullivan who is averaging 3.64 kills and 1.32 digs per set. NAU returns three starters and seven letterwinners to a team that went 15-10 overall and 7-9 in the Big Sky Conference a year ago. This is the ninth meeting between the two teams. Wyoming leads the series 6-2. The last time the two teams met was Sept. 3, 1988 as the Cowgirls defeated the Lumberjacks, 3-1. NAU is coached by Craig Choate who is in his second season with the program.
In their second match of the weekend, the Cowgirls will play The Citadel Bulldogs, on Saturday, Sept. 12, at 1:00 p.m. The Citadel is currently 1-7 overall and will play Utah State before taking on the Cowgirls. They are led by Tatum Jestila who is averaging 2.90 kills and 2.27 digs per set. They return four starters and seven letterwinners to a team that went 9-23 overall and 2-16 in the Southern Conference a year ago. This is the first ever meeting between the two schools. The Bulldogs are coached by Carol Geiger who is in her fourth season.
Wyoming will close out the weekend against the Utah State Aggies, on Saturday night, at 4:00 p.m. They are currently 3-3 overall and will play The Citadel before facing the Cowgirls. The Aggies are led by Liz McArthur who is averaging 3.54 kills and 1.58 dps. Utah State returns five starters and seven letterwinners to a team that went 11-17 overall and 9-7 in the Western Athletic Conference a year ago. This is the 24th meeting between the two teams. Wyoming leads the series 13-10. The last time the two teams met was September 14, 2000 as the Aggies defeated the Cowgirls 3-1. Utah State is coached by Grayson DuBose who is in his fourth year with the program.
