The University of Wyoming men's basketball team opened the 2008-09 season with an exhibition contest against the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers on Saturday night in Laramie. The Cowboys defeated the Orediggers by a score of 72-60 in a contest that exemplified what college exhibition basketball games look like.

Wyoming played a variety of line-ups, showed glimpses of raw talent and had periods of dominant play. However, despite leading for the majority of the game, UW could not pull away from Mines and was forced to play a tight game into the final minutes.

The Cowboys had four players score in double figures, led by senior guard Brandon Ewing with 19 points. Ewing also grabbed seven rebounds. Redshirt freshman Afam Muojeke posted a double-double, with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Senior Sean Ogirri scored 15 points in his first game action in a Wyoming uniform and redshirt freshman Adam Waddell made his presence felt in the post by pouring in 12 points.

CSM's leading scorer was guard Kyle Pape, who had 21 points in 32 minutes of play.

In a game without flow and with sometimes awkward moments, players from each team left the floor bloody after a collision under the basket (UW's Mahamoud Diakite and CSM's Sean Armstrong), while both teams turned the ball over 16 times apiece and there were 49 total fouls whistled.

The Orediggers jumped quickly out of the blocks and led in the early going, 10-5 at the 15:23 mark. But with the score in favor of Mines 12-11 at 11:17, Wyoming would go on a 15-0 run to give themselves a 26-12 lead that they would never relinquish. With five minutes remaining in the game CSM would pull within five at 62-57, but the Cowboys would hit big shots down the stretch to get the win.

The game was UW's lone exhibition contest of the season and Wyoming will open the regular season at home next Friday night against Cal State Bakersfield, with tip-off at 7 p.m.
