The Wyoming Cowboys will face archrival Colorado State on Wednesday, March 12 in the First Round of the 2008 Phillips 66 Mountain West Conference Men's Basketball Championship in Las Vegas. The game is scheduled to tip off at Noon, Mountain Time (11 a.m., Pacific Time) from the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. There is no television coverage of the Wyoming-Colorado State First Round game. The Cowboy Sports Network radio broadcast will begin with the pregame show at 11:30 a.m., Mountain Time (10:30 a.m., Pacific).

The Cowboys will enter the tournament as the No. 8 seed, with a 12-17 overall record and a 5-11 record in the Mountain West Conference this season. Colorado State will be the No. 9 seed entering the championship, with a 6-24 overall record and an 0-16 MWC record this season. Wyoming swept the two regular-season games versus the Rams earlier this year, marking the first time since the 2002-03 season that either Front Range rival had swept the regular-season series. UW won 73-58 in Laramie on Jan. 26, and captured a 77-67 road win in Fort Collins on Feb. 27.

This Wednesday's meeting between the Cowboys and Rams will mark the fifth time the two teams have played each other in a conference tournament and the third time since both have been members of the Mountain West Conference. Wyoming holds a 3-1 advantage versus CSU in conference tournament games.

Below are the previous meetings between the two archrivals in conference tournament action.

Wyoming has posted a 6-8 record in the eight previous Mountain West Conference Tournaments. Last year in the 2007 MWC Tournament, Wyoming advanced to the semifinals for the second consecutive year, although they entered the tournament as the No. 5 seed. The Cowboys have advanced to the semifinals in five of the first eight MWC Conference Tournaments (2000, 2001, 2002, 2006 and 2007). Wyoming reached the Championship Game once -- in 2006 -- losing to San Diego State, 64-69 in one overtime.

The Pokes' overall record in conference tournaments is 16-21. Wyoming played in its first conference tournament in 1984 in the first-ever Western Athletic Conference Tournament. From 1984 to 1998, Wyoming appeared in 15 WAC Tournaments, posting a 10-13 record. The only time UW failed to qualify for a conference tournament was in 1999 in the 16-team WAC, but UW earned an NIT bid that year despite missing the conference tourney.

Wyoming advanced to three successive WAC Tournament Championship Games in 1986, `87 and `88. UW went on to win the 1987 and 1988 WAC Tournament titles.

The winner of Wednesday's Wyoming-Colorado State game will face No. 1 seed BYU on Thursday, March 13 in a quarterfinal game to begin at 1 p.m., Mountain Time (Noon, Pacific).
