University of Wyoming Track and Field is officially underway in the 2008 year as they finished the first day of events at the Holiday Inn Invitational held at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln on Friday.

After one day of competition, the Pokes had three winners: junior Jake Shanklin in the 35lb weight throw, senior Kate Burton in the 20lb weight throw and junior Mark Korir in the 5,000 meter race.

Shanklin, a junior from Ellensburg, Wash., not only won the weight throw event with a toss of 67' 1 1/2" but he also qualified for the NCAA provisionals. Jake is looking to make his way back to the NCAA Championships where last year he placed 12th in the weight throw.

Burton, in her first meet of the year, won the weight throw with a heave of 57' 3/4". She was followed by junior Courtney Gougler with a third place toss of 55' 9 1/4".

Korir, who is coming off his second straight All-American campaign during the cross country season, won the 5,000 meter race with a time of 14:40.

Along with the three winners, the Cowboys and Cowgirls had five runners qualify for the finals. Senior Shaylee Babbitt and sophomore Jennifer Schmitz both qualified for the women's 60 meter hurdles with times of 8.90 and 9.07 respectively. Senior Maricel DaCosta and junior Amanda Gordon qualified for the women's 60 meter sprint with times of 7.98 and 8.14. Along with the women, senior Cowboy Vashone West qualified for the men's 60 meter sprint with a time of 7.10, all of whom will compete tomorrow in the finals of their respected events.

"Overall, we looked very rusty, even in our winning performances," said eighth year head coach Don Yentes. "Christmas break took a toll on us, but with two more weeks of training coming up hopefully we can knock some more of this rust off."

The Cowboys and Cowgirls will continue action tomorrow at the Holiday Inn Invitational.
